Heavy Burdens: 7 Ways LGBTQ Christians Experience Harm in the Church by Bridget Eileen Rivera

“I’d rather have learned that he was dead.” Those words, spoken by a mother after learning her son was gay, were shared with her small group Bible study.

Unknown to her, the author of “Heavy Burdens: 7 Way LGBTQ Christians Experience Harm in the Church” was sitting next to her at the time. She was, in fact, friends with the woman’s gay son.

Bridget Rivera’s book is not an attempt to argue for the “rightness” or “wrongness” of non-heterosexual people. Instead it is a plea to Christians and the churches they attend to be mindful of the truth that ALL of us are created in the image of God.

Instead of shunning those seeking to learn about and follow Jesus, Christians should recognize that God meets all of us where we are and leads us to where He is calling us to be. Take time to read this book and to learn how you can love and accept people wherever they are. God does.
